‘Dad had seen a ‘mini moto’ for sale and thought it was the coolest thing ever One of the most exciting newcomers to the 2024 Cemcor Cookstown 100 is Co Offaly competitor, Kevin Keyes. Keyes, a 26-year-old self-employed builder ( Mondello Results), is a past British Championship contender, and the current Wirral 100 Champion, along with various Irish short circuit titles to his credit. Just last weekend, at the opening rounds of the Mondello Masters series, Keyes took no less than 6 podiums, including, 4 wins and 2 x second placings! At only 26, Keyes has an amazing 20 years of two-wheel experience, which all began in minimotos at Nutts Corner, where in his first race, he finished 5th! Kevin recently took time out to attend the Photoshoot and Press Launch for the 2024 Cemcor Cookstown 100, despite a busy schedule, Kevin, made time for a quick interview, where he gave us a rundown on his career in motorcycling; “I've been racing for twenty years now! Where does time go? I was lucky enough to take quite a few wins, podiums and championships, both at home here in Ireland and across the water on the mainland. I've been a short circuit rider all my career up to 2022, where that season saw me fall short financially to maintain my British Championship Ride, so I gave road racing a go at my local circuit, the Race of the South meeting at Walderstown where I rode my 600 Kawasaki and competed in the Senior Support race, surprised myself by winning both races that weekend. Up to now, that has been my only road race, For this year, I've embarked on a completely different approach, with my plans now aimed at more road racing, with the first being the Cemcor Cookstown 100, then all being well, on to the International North West 200 and then the big one, that is the Isle Of Man TT Races. My plans also include the Mondello Masters series, where along with my Sponsors, Daracore, I am hoping to put something back into the sport I love, by helping nurture younger competitors at short circuits.” Looking back on my results, I'm proud to say, that I've multiple Irish championships, Mondello Masters 125cc, Supersport Cup and Supersport Pro champion. BSB KTM 390 2nd in the championship, Pirelli British Superstock 600 P4 in the championship, British Wirrall 100 Superbike Champion”. What got you started in Motorcycle racing? I've always loved bikes and racing with my Dad having a huge interest and passion for bikes, Dad always had bikes himself for the road and I guess it sorta grew from there! Dad had seen a ‘mini moto’ for sale and thought it was the coolest thing ever! So he went and bought it, and before we knew it, I was racing.! Having known Kevin, basically since he started racing in minimotos, I was intrigued to find out, why road racing. Basically, I have always taken racing in my stride and enjoyed it, In doing so, I've also been lucky enough to have what it takes to win, and more so, on every bike, in every class and in every championship I've competed in. Having done this, I decided, I needed a new challenge, and I've always had an inkling to try my hand at the roads and see how good of a career I can have there, and where better to start than the Cemcor Cookstown 100 road races! Before his 4-hour drive back home, Kevin paid a special Thanks to the Cookstown & District Motor Cycle Club for inviting him to the Press Launch and wished everyone a safe and successful day racing, he also pointed out, that without the following Sponsors, this would NOT be happening, so a Big THANK YOU To Everyone mentioned here, especially my Mam, Dad and girlfriend Sarah, Thank You Guys & Gals Sponsors Daracore Racing Daracore Ltd MotorcycleTraining.ie FJS Plant Agri and Groundcare By Design Joinery Cotter Motorcycles DB Coatings Iv Media Winners Win Grill Shack Kevin Keyes Supporters Club Dad & Mam & Sister Girlfriend Sarah Class(es) entered; Superbike and Supersport Bikes; Yamaha R1 and Yamaha R6 2024 Cemcor Cookstown 100; Friday/Saturday 26/27 April This is a ‘Closed Event’ Roads Close Friday & Saturday @ 7.30 am Newcomers Bus; Friday @ 10.00am 17 Practice sessions Time permitting, Three races; Supertwin B, Supersport 600( Fastest 23) & Open events(Fastest 23)
