Welsh man Bellars Smith makes KDM Hire Cookstown 100 Debut

Welsh newcomer this weekend, 35 year old Jay Bellars Smith, has been riding motorcycles since he was 6 years old, where he started on a Yamaha TY80 riding trials in the hills and valleys of South Wales. He supported one of his heroes Colin Bevan as a team mascot at several of the Road Races as a kid such as the Southern 100 and Dundrod 150 which in turn lit a fire in the belly of Bellers Smith to try to emulate Colin and become a Road Racer. A motorcycle mechanic for GAP Motorcycles Mountain Ash, and a part time Music roadie,Jays first Short Circuit Road Race was in 2001 at Three Sisters circuit Preston at the age of 11 racing in the Junior Road Race Championship racing a Cagiva Prima 75 where he finished a creditable 4th. In 2003 Jay won a place in the ACU Road Race Academy alongside the Lowes twins and Peter Hickman! Unfortunately 2004 was not to be as Jay, a newcomer at the North West 200, and only 17 at the time, had a big accident at the black hill, sustaining a broken back , thus putting him out for 2 seasons. In 2006 Jay returned racing his own teams Yamaha R6 to win 48 of his races out of a total of 53 that he participated in. Winning the Darley Moor Championship as well as wins at his local National Road Race Aberdare Park. Jay has raced at the North West 200 from 06 up to 2010 running top 15 pace. Jays also had podium successes at Olivers Mount in Scarborough and many many wins at Aberdare Park. At Aberdare in 2021 Bellers Smith was only headed by the second fastest ever IOM TT Newcomer, Davey Todd in the final race of the weekend! This weekend Jay competes on the Mick and Gary Smith made and prepared GP1 Supermono 732 nicknamed “Katy” which finished 2nd at the last European Supermono race at Most in Czechia in 2019. Also in Jays Stable this weekend is the JayBob Racing Aermacchi 350 Ala D’oro Metisse he campaigns in the 350 classics. Jays reason to ride the classic is so he can learn the 2.1 mile Orritor circuit at a slightly slower more comfortable pace. Jay hopes he can gain top 10 results as he enters his first Irish National ever at Cookstown 2022.
